another little weird tuning, folks

i don't think anyone has yet posted a tuning for shadowland(s?). i have the rocket house version as well as a couple live performances, so i humbly offer my interpretation. as always, i lack the patience or acumen to tab specifically, so here is a skeletal version of the song which i hope can give you a framework from which to work from. remember, these are approximated fingerings and are not meant to convey any rhythmic sense. good luck.

C#F#BF#G#C#

C#----- 0---0---(0)------------------x
G#------0---0---(0)----------------- x
F#------7---7---(5) -----------------x -sl-
B-------5---5---(4)----------545-0--4-------------7
F#------7---7---(5)-----------------5-----------8
C#-----0---0----0------------------5----------8

verse:

C#-----0------0
G#-----7------5
F#-----0------0
B-------7------5
F#-----5------3
C#-----0------0

" sacrafice of civilization":

C#-----0-------0-----(0)
G#-----0-------0-----(0)
F#-----2-------5-----(4)
B-------1-------4-----(2)
F#-----2-------5-----(4)
C#-----x-------x------x

then back to the 1st part.

cities and cinders in her hand
where i did follow you out to the shadowland
sacrafice of civilization
out away from the place we been confined
two thousand years delayed in the diamond mine
crypt of law unto the church of crime
drawing me to the shadowland
from the west where you waded across the sand
into the south suggested on her skin
drawing me to the shadowland
out away from the way we was defined
from the church of law under the power line
drawing me to the shadowland
sacrafice of civilization
civilization

the live versions are the same tunings in different keys and feature some altered lyrics (for instance, in both live cuts, it is the east and not the south suggested on her skin). for simplification i have used the key and the lyrics from the original album. there are all sorts of little fills and licks and deviations that he plays, so use my version only as a crude reference and play along with the album. and as always, please post criticisms, improvements, corrections, or other ideas (lyrics, too--- the oft repeated "out away" could very easily be "all the way" or "alleyway" or even "highway" and "drawing me" sounds like "drown me"--- i have no idea), as they are always appreciated. good luck and enjoy the playing

Chris's Music

Thanks Cochise, Any help with Chris's songs is appreciated.

Everytime a new song is posted I don't get any sleep for the next few days because I am in my basement playing it over and over.
It is well worth the loss of sleep.

Thanks again
I am off to my guitar.

Ken

Thanks dude! It sounds great to my ears, one of my all time favorites for sure and I'm really glad to be able to jam around with it now!

Sorry just a mention of tuning, but you may
find it sounds right when you play with a slide bar.

thanks again, hiroshi

what a coincidence! i've been working on this song all weekend, hesitant to post my ideas, and you beat me to it. i'm glad you did, too. the fact that you came up with the same tuning makes me a little more confident in my version. using a slide on the 1st fret is a little awkward at first, but it soon passes. so for those of you that are still curious:

B----------------------------3---------------------------------1
G#----------5--------------3--------------3------------------1
D#-------7----7-------5---3-----------5----5-------3-------1
B------------------6-7------3-------------------4--5----------1
E---------7------------------3-----------5---------------------1
B------0---------------------3----(0)--------------------------1

the bar chords are, of course, played on a slide, as are all of the verses, i.e.:

5th (slide)-----8th-------------7th------------------10th-----------
so well you sure was spoiled today/how did you get that way

5th--------------8th----------
and i know its only noise any thing i say

and back to the 1st part. he does one other thing towards the end of the tune that i'm not sure about, but here's what i'm playing:

B----------------------------------------------------------------------------
G#-------------8-----------------------(0)-----------------(0)------------
D#-----------------8----------8--------(0)-----------------(0)------------
B-------------9--------9--10------------5------------------3--------------
E------------10--------------------------5------------------3---------------
B------0----------------------------------5------------------3----------0---

anyway, these are just my ideas. let me know what you guys think. this is one of the most beautiful, unusual songs from a guy who wrote beautiful, unusual songs. can't wait for reiter in. i have a couple live versions of the flaming lips song (mountainside) that i hope to transcribe in the near future. its pretty simple. an open G tuning(though i haven't checked what key). yet another great song. what a loss... anyway, thanks again and good luck

p.s this site re-formats eveything i write, so please excuse the rather sloppy tabs (here and elsewhere). those bar chords shouldn't be that wavy. unless you're drunk.
